Stepping Off The Path

“You’re a brave woman, digging around in there.”

The woman’s voice startled me.

I had been walking my dog along the paved town greenway when a fallen log adorned with crystal-like mushrooms caught my eye. I had just stepped off the path and was leaning in for a closer look when the woman walked by.

She continued speaking... “My dog goes off the path, but I don’t dare.”

I smiled. I explained how I noticed the beautiful mushrooms and had to check them out as I have never seen any like them before.

She stood on her tiptoes, craning her neck and said, “Oh yeah, I see them.” She still did not step off the pavement.

It’s not the first time I've been in the company of people who stick to the trail. I’ve heard comments on the forest bathing walks I’ve guided like, “Wow. You know, I realized that I just don’t ever leave the trail.”

In the spirit of all is welcome, that’s ok. I’m not going to force you to leave the trail, however, I will encourage it.

Nature’s most beautiful and amazing treasures are often found where the masses don’t tread. Yes, we want to "leave no trace" and not harm the land. And yes, we want to make sure we don't get lost, but it pains me when I hear that someone’s fear holds them back from experiencing these sensory gifts. In my experience, the risk outweighs the reward.

Just like in life.

The older I get, it seems like the less risks I take, and for the last few days, I’ve been reflecting on where I may be sticking to the prescribed path and missing out on a glorious experience.

How about you?

Do you ever step off your path?

Where is fear holding you back?

Where are you playing it safe and missing out on a world of possibility?

Think about it and the next time you are wandering along the sidewalk and something catches your eye, go ahead, step off the path. Go explore. You may find it’s totally worth it.

Forest Love,

Julie
